I'll do maintenance over the summer and keep things from rusting and seizing but it ran like a champ and most importantly.....it STARTED quickly and easily EVERY TIME!
The 110 plug in starter wire is a dream come true.
My son has a similar one but he's so macho he insists on his pull start.
Having seen and worked on several recoils on these and chainsaws etc I know that often the parts can be plastic or nylon so why break you arm or wear out those plastic parts when you can start it wit the push of a button.
If I'm in a location where I can't use the 110 then, and ONLY then, I'll use the pull start.
Moves a lot of snow and it never bogged down here in Northern Ontario.
Highly recommended
UPDATE......ALMOST EXACTLY 1 YEAR LATER....JAN 23 2020
Last winter we had a good bit of snow and the blower NEVER failed to start and after a 5 minute warn-up....pretty necessary in my opinion, it worked like a charm.
Put fuel stabilizer in for the long summer rest but this year it started first shot and the other day it was -23 degrees and it started....took 2 tries but it started.
We have had one 13 inch snow this year and I have to confess the blower struggled a bit with all that snow....the motor slowed down and it wouldn't throw the snow very far....maybe 10-12 feet but once the first run was done I did a half cut from then on and it worked like a dream.
Keep it ice-free in the winter and lubed and painted in the summer and I can see it lasting 10 years.
UPDATE JAN 28, 2023
Blower still going strong with ALL the original parts and only some fairly easy adjustments to the cables to date.
Seems a tiny bit light on power for the deep snow...over 12 inches, but we've only had 2 or 3 so far and it copes pretty well, just need to take it slow.
All in all, a good investment and I expect it will last another 6 years.
Although I’ve only used it once, I am very impressed, and am now looking forward to the next storm!
Update January 2022
Just cleared my driveway after a major storm in Southern Ontario. This machine went through it like a warm knife through butter! No hesitation or slipping. Threw the snow 40 to 50 feet. Starts instantly and works perfectly. I really don’t understand the negative reviews. It is important for any snow blower to match the speed with the amount of snow - if you move too fast it will bog down and slip. Yes, some assembly is required out of the box, but it is not complicated, and there are YouTube videos showing how to do it.

1) Overall Quality - The overall quality of this machine seems quite good. It comes in a big box - the auger, impeller and drive mechanism are fully assembled with the assembly process being to attach the handlebars and chute (and route the control cable and light wiring). The overall fit and finish of this blower is quite good. It is made in China, but it's difficult to find an american built snowblower these days.
2) Assembly - I did not find this to be very difficult. If you're familiar with working on power equipment, it should go fairly easily. I have a fair amount of professional mechanical experience. The only challenge to assembly is the correct routing of the chute control cable.
3) Initial startup and use - The engine comes with oil in it. The engine manual states that you must check the oil level - mine was perfectly fine. I added fuel to the tank and hit the electric starter button. The engine fired up immediately in an off beat putter which settled immediately to a smooth idle as I turned the choke off. The choke is a red plastic knob that feels a little flimsy - I'd probably avoid using it with heavy gloves for fear of breaking it. I drove the machine around my driveway a few times and noticed that the transmission seemed to be slipping slightly. I noticed that the drive cable did not seem to be very tight so I adjusted the drive cable and went around my driveway again - no further slippage was noted.
4) Overall useability - I think this machine will do a great job for my small driveway. It is important to keep in mind that this machine has only a 24" swath. If you have a massive driveway, this machine isn't going to work. Also, if you live in an area of steep hills, the friction drive transmission will probably prove fragile if you try to take full swaths while climbing hills. Lastly, this machine does not have differential steering. You turn this machine by skidding one tire. It's a small machine, but it does take a little bit of brawn to move the thing around a tight corner.
5) Overall rating - I rate this machine as 5 stars because I really like it. I've yet to have a big snow, but I was able to clean up a few icy mounds on my driveway and this machine absolutely hurled the slushy mess 20-40 feet out of the way. I think it's well made with a few design limitations that I was aware of when I purchased it. I'll follow up with a comment in a few months on how this machine holds up.
Now, about the machine itself. setup wasn't too bad, i wasn't familiar with snow blowers, so it took me a few minutes to know what the heck they were referring to when they mentioned different cables that needed to be attached. But after i put it together, i put it to a test with some packed 2 foot high (and higher) piles of snow in front of my house. This snow had been melting a bit over the week since the blizzard, so it was packed and slushy. This baby churned through it like a champ. I had to go a bit slower, back it up, go again, in order for it to get through, but it made it through. I'm sure that when i get to use this on fresh powdery snow it will be even easier.
the only complaint i have is that it's hard to turn it. The wheels don't spin independently, so you kind of have to drag it around to turn it. Other than that though, i've extremely pleased with it.
P.S. for those that never heard of this, there's a website called camelcamelcamel dot com (yes, "camel" 3 times). COpy and paste the Amazon URL of the product you want, and it will show you the price over the last 6 months or so. Very handy.
Back to the snowblower itself. First, the price: I managed to order it for about 670 dollars BUT the price and the stock availability may vary so if you're not in a rush - wait for it to be priced lower than what you might see now.
Now the assembly part: contrary to some other people's experience I didn't need to spend much time assembling this model. Yes, the included paper instructions aren't very detailed, however we live in 21st century now, meaning there is a VERY detailed and thorough assembly video available on YouTube, made by B&S themselves. B&S actually has this video embedded on their site, right on the description page for this specific model. Just watch it a few times, pause whenever you need to and you can finish assembly in an hour or less. Watch out, though - you need to follow the exact steps, ESPECIALLY when it comes to torquing the certain nuts and bolts. Unfortunately the included nuts and bolts are pretty poor in terms of quality so make sure to tighten them up VERY carefully, to a specified torque value. I learned that fact the hard way (stripped a few of the bolts/nuts and trying to remove something like a lock nut with nylon insert from stripped carriage bolt was extremely annoying). Fortunately you can easily replace most of the included nuts and bolts with standard M8-sized ones in case if you break some of these.
As to the actual performance of the unit - I can't really say much because I haven't had the chance to test it on real snow yet. But the engine is very easy to start, even with recoil (pull) start, and everything (including LED headlight) seem to operate well so far.
All in all it's a pretty decent unit for the price, although B&S can make it even better by, for example, including the link (with QR code) to the assembly video in their paper manual, as well as using a better quality nuts and bolts instead of fragile stuff they currently include with this unit.
The instructions to put this together are atrocious. I had to go between 2 videos on YouTube and and the instruction manual. It took about an hour and a half. The operating instructions are as bad as the setup. Nothing is clearly labeled as far as the choke, fuel cutoff and idle.
But on to the the actual operation in snow. We had about 10 inches of snow in Chicago a few days before the snow blower arrived so some of the snow was packed down and some not. I did about half my parking pad before the snow blower seemed to lose most of it's power. At over 9 hp it should power to spare. First thing I noticed was it didn't get down to the pavement. After finishing the pad I moved to the alley in front of my pad and this is where it really struggled. The wheels were spinning and not pushing the blower alone. And when they weren't just spinning, oddly enough they didn't move unless I lifted up the back end of the blower.
I some what finished the alley. Some of the snow was packed down and icy so I didn't expect much. I moved to the entrance of my lot where I have my main SUV parked and the snow was 8-12 inches. Here the blower would barely go forward and barely throw snow. I tried for about 15 minutes and just gave up. I put the snow blower away half pissed and half disappointed I had bought this piece of junk.
I discovered after looking at the front of the blower that ALL 4 shear pins on the auger had broken. So the auger was literally not turning while I was using it. My last blower was a Craftsman 5.5 HP that was a beast in the snow. When it encountered deep snow the wheels would keep turning and digging in. Not like this BS. I mean B&S.
So after doing some research I discovered that broken shear pins are a thing with this blower. I installed the 4 spare pins that came with it and tried to order more. But of course they are out of stock. Of course they would be if they break that easily after only using it for an hour or less.
In closing, find something else other than B&S. Pay a few hundred dollars more but avoid this brand.
